The Conversation You Should Have Had Earlier

Most bands avoid the money conversation because it's uncomfortable. Then a cheque arrives and suddenly everyone has a different understanding of the deal. The best time to have this conversation is before you make any money — the second best time is right now.

Different Models

Equal split: Everyone gets the same share of everything. Simple, democratic, promotes unity. Works best when contributions are roughly equal or when band identity matters more than individual credit.
Role-based split: Different splits for different income types. For example: live income is split equally, but publishing goes only to songwriters. More complex but potentially more fair.
Point system: Each member earns 'points' based on contributions (writing, performing, producing). Income is distributed proportionally. Most granular, but requires ongoing tracking and can become adversarial.

Formalise It

Whatever model you choose, write it down in a Band Partnership Agreement. This document should cover: income splits, decision-making processes, IP ownership, what happens when a member leaves, and how the band name is controlled. A music lawyer can draft this for a few hundred dollars — it's one of the best investments a band can make.
