Why TikTok Works For Music

TikTok's algorithm surfaces content to people who don't follow you, based on what they engage with — not just what their network posts. This means a genuinely compelling video from an artist with 100 followers can reach 100,000 people. No other major platform offers this level of organic reach for unknown artists. That's why it matters.

What Actually Works

The content that drives music discovery on TikTok is: hooks used as soundtracks to other content (people saving and reusing your music in their own videos); compelling original content that shows your personality and musical world; storytelling and process videos (writing a song, behind the scenes of recording); and live session clips that show raw talent. What doesn't work: polished promotional content, static 'listen now' posts, and anything that feels like an ad.

The 'Uncomfortable' Problem

Many musicians feel embarrassed posting on TikTok because it feels performative or cringe. The reframe: every successful artist you admire who uses TikTok felt this initially. The artists who grow are the ones who keep posting despite the awkwardness, learn from the data (watch time, shares), and iterate. Your 50th video will be better than your 1st. Post before you're ready.

Practical Strategy

Post 3–5 times per week. Use your own music as the soundtrack as often as possible (every play of your audio counts as a stream and builds algorithmic profile). Find the intersection of what you genuinely enjoy creating and what your audience engages with. Don't chase trends that don't fit your brand — authenticity is the most durable strategy.
