Understand What They're Actually Asking For
Before evaluating the deal, be precise about what 'exclusivity' means in their ask. Are they requesting: exclusive placement on their playlist only (you can pitch elsewhere but not to direct competitors)? Exclusive release — you can't release the track anywhere for the hold period? Or just first-access (they get to feature it first before you push it to other playlists)? The first and third are reasonable. The second is significant and should be compensated.
Evaluate the Actual Reach
Not all playlist placements are equal. A playlist with 100,000 followers sounds impressive until you realise engagement is low, the followers are from bot farms, or the genre mismatch means skip rates will tank your Spotify algorithm signals. Ask for: their average stream numbers per placement, listener demographics, and examples of other artists they've placed who've seen measurable growth from the feature.
The 3-Month Hold Problem
Three months is a long time in a release cycle. Music trends move fast, your social media momentum around the release will peak and fade well before the three months is up, and you lose the ability to pitch to editorial playlists (Spotify's own curated playlists, which are far more valuable) if the track has already been 'out' in limited release. Understand exactly what you can and can't do during this period.
What You Should Negotiate
Push for: a shorter hold period (4–6 weeks maximum), clearly defined scope of exclusivity (specific competitor playlists only, not all pitching activity), the ability to still pitch to DSP editorial playlists (Spotify, Apple Music, etc.), and a minimum stream guarantee if the hold is significant. If they won't budge on terms, the quality of their offering probably doesn't match their ask.
The Golden Rule
No organic playlist placement — regardless of size — should require you to sacrifice your ability to pitch to official DSP editorial playlists. Editorial playlists from Spotify, Apple, and Amazon are almost always more valuable than any independent playlist. Don't trade them for anything less than a very compelling proposition.
